It’s probably no surprise that, just like we tend to post only the most picture-perfect moments of our lives on Instagram, I also share only the most striking curl transformations - usually thanks to skilled styling techniques and naturally well-defined curls with lots of potential.
But let’s be real. Let’s also talk about those not-so-successful transformations, so you come to the curly hair salon with realistic expectations and don’t waste your time trying to get results your hair simply can’t deliver.
So, when is it better NOT to come to the curly hair salon?
1. If you’re not ready to commit to your curly hair journey and still plan to straighten your hair weekly. Curly cuts are done on dry, curly hair - they’ll look amazing when your curls are defined, but not so much when straightened.
2. If you expect the visit to magically fix all your hair concerns: better curls, less shedding, zero frizz, and curls that stay perfect the next day. Curl transformations aren’t miracle treatments - they’re not chemical processes where we can force your hair to curl. If your hair is wavy, I’ll enhance your waves. Products help showcase what your hair naturally has. That “curl enhancement” will need to be refreshed the next day.
When should you come to the curly hair salon - but manage your expectations?
- If you don’t like how curly hair looks, think it “ages” you, or just want it to look “less curly” (yes, I get that request too). I can give you beautiful curls but until you get past your mindset, you may not love the result. I know this because I once felt the same during my own straightening addiction. Accepting your curls is a journey, and one appointment won’t get you there.
2. If your hair is extremely damaged, thin, barely holding a curl, and you're not ready to trim it because you want to “keep the length.”
Chances are, the result won’t be what you hoped. I do my best to bring out the natural curl potential, but I can’t promise miracles. This isn’t like makeup or nails where you show a photo and get the same outcome. If your hair isn’t very curly or is too damaged, I can’t force it to behave differently.
Transformations with thin, damaged ends that couldn’t be cut. The top curled beautifully, but the ends didn’t respond.
3. If you already know everything about curls and have watched every YouTube and TikTok tutorial out there.
Some say, “I didn’t learn anything new during the appointment, I already do all this at home.” That’s fair. I share all the available information. For some, it’s life-changing. For others, it’s well-known. I can’t reinvent the wheel.
4. If your curls are already healthy, you’re great at styling them, and you have no complaints - you won’t see a dramatic before-and-after. This isn’t a failed transformation, it’s just that your curls already looked great before. My curl transformation in a salon in Brazil is a perfect example.
5. If your hair is very short, you likely won’t see a major transformation. There’s just not enough length for curls to form and I can’t use much product or style it with brushes. The results will be similar to what you can achieve at home.
Good news?
Out of about 600 transformations last year, only a handful were real “misses.” Even those were valuable. Because you learn: can your hair curl? If not, is it due to its natural structure or because it’s damaged and needs time to heal? Sometimes I’ll suggest returning in a year, once your hair is stronger. Even a disappointing result can guide you toward what your hair truly needs.
And don’t forget: every curl is welcome. Whether it’s soft waves or tight coils, they’re all beautiful. Many clients tell me, “Just so you know, my hair isn’t as curly as what I saw on your Instagram…” But Instagram only shows about 10% of reality. Every curl type has its own magic and every transformation, even an imperfect one, teaches you something. ❤️
