1. ONLY COMB WET HAIR
Curly hair should be combed dry unless getting ready for a Halloween party or a poodle parade. In all other In some cases, we only comb wet hair and as long as we keep the conditioner on , because this is:
- Safer . Conditioner acts as a barrier between the brush and the hair, smoothing the cuticle and reducing the likelihood of breakage. When the curl is combed dry, its natural pattern is disrupted and it becomes frizzy.
-
Easier . Conditioner makes hair easier to glide, making knots and tangles easier to comb out.
2. MOISTURIZE THEM
Apply all styling products to very wet hair. Please note:
-
Not on limp hair (because excess water will dilute the products, some of the product will drip off and the curl will not be fixed)
-
And not on damp hair (because if there isn't enough water in the curl, the gel alone won't hold the curl together and it will dry frizzy). Gel needs water to work.
3. DO NOT TOUCH YOUR CURLS UNTIL THEY ARE DRY. AND ESPECIALLY DO NOT TOUCH THEM.
Drying curls are a drying work of art, and all the extra tossing, scrunching, and fluffing won't make you curlier. Touching your curls before the styling products have set will only ruffle them and disrupt their natural pattern.
Cicinas knew this since 2000 and sang, "Don't touch my lady, don't touch her. Don't touch her curly hair." It's time for us to learn too
4. USE GEL, NOT CREAM
Yes, I know. You were told that if your hair is frizzy, you need more hydration, more masks, more conditioners, and more creams.
Curly hair is frizzy because it is more porous, and no matter how much cream you apply, you won't reduce the porosity of your hair.* The only way to beautifully hold and lock your curls so that moisture penetrating porous hair doesn't blow them out is with gel.
5. APPLY THE GEL EVENLY, NOT OVERWHELMINGLY
We apply the gel not by squeezing or pushing it into the curls, but by using a combing, "raking" motion to go through each section. By pushing the gel into the hair rather than applying it, the gel remains only on the ends, leaving the middle and top sections of the hair uncovered. Bonus points if, after applying the gel, you go over each section with a dense-bristled curling brush, which will hold the curls even tighter. Apply additional gel to short hairs and front strands that the brush doesn't pick up and twirl around your finger.
6. THE MORE YOU USE THE DRYER, THE STRAIGHTER YOU WILL GET
7. PROTECT YOUR HAIR WHILE YOU'RE SLEEPING
The more you protect your curls at night, the less frizz they will have, and the lighter your curl hangover will be the next morning .
One point if you sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase. Two points if you wear your hair up and sleep on a proper pillowcase. Three points if you sleep behind a proper pillowcase, wear your curls up, and hide them under a hat. Will a man laugh at the hat? He'll laugh for three nights and get used to it.
